Villa Lindsey

I have long believed that there are at least ten thousand decisions to make in a house. Actually, that may be too low an estimate. After working with clients across the country on their homes, it was exciting for Lindsey and me to make a home for ourselves. We wanted a house that would be comfortable for just the two of us but also serve as a place where our five children and grandchildren and family and friends could gather.

The heart of the home is the kitchen. People always congregate in the kitchen, so we wanted ours to be right in the center of the house, looking into the garden on one side and the pool on the other. This created a situation where guests would come in through a small entry and from there head directly into the kitchen, which we loved.

When I’m asked to name my favorite space in the house, it’s easy to answer—I love all of them. I take my morning coffee in the breakfast nook, then move out into the garden, or to my studio to work. Our home feels like a peaceful retreat, and a very quiet and private one, it is. Inside looking out, you can’t see another house, and because of its Mediterranean nature you can easily imagine you are traveling in Italy or Spain, or the south of France, or maybe just dreaming.
