Veranda recently featured our Lake Norman house in North Carolina, designed alongside interior designer Sean Anderson. The lot was long and narrow, but that’s exactly the kind of site that keeps you honest—it tells you where to celebrate the views and where to shield against them, and if you’re really paying attention, the house starts to lay itself out. We built in stone, glass, and wood, letting the home ramble along the property so the lake reveals itself from a different angle at every turn. The all-black kitchen was a quiet act of rebellion—a deliberate move away from the all-white kitchens we’d all grown tired of, and proof that a dark room flooded with natural light can feel anything but heavy.
